“Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.” (Luke 5:4)
Jesus has always instructed his followers to “Launch out into the deep.”
Like Simon Peter, men and women of faith continue to respond with obedience to the Lord’s Word.
“And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.” (vs.5)
Likewise, the faith of Paul brought 276 souls safely through the storm.
“Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.” (Acts 27:25)
Paul and his companions faced a hopeless situation at sea.
“…all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.” (vs.20)
Yet faith triumphs over panic:
“And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoisted up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.” (vs. 27:40)
But in the Church today, few leaders are still committed to the course charted for us by the Lord. Fearful men of religion have committed mutiny against the Captain of our Salvation. They have seized the helm, steering the old ship of Zion only into the calmest of waters.
Faithless and afraid, they bring an accusation against their own Sovereign:
“And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?” (Mark 4:37-38)
Still full of compassion, the Master quells the storm and calms the sea (vs.39). Then he turns and asks two pointed questions:
“…Why are ye so fearful?” and
“…How is it that ye have no faith?” (vs.40)
This rebuke continues to sting us today. Where are those young people who still have the courage to hear the Master’s voice, “Heal the sick, cleanse the leper, raise the dead…?” (Matt.10:18)
Has Jesus no integrity, that he would command us to do what cannot be done? Brothers and sisters, is there unrighteousness with God? Will you dare to take him at his word? “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.”
“For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” (1Thes.5:3)
“How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?” (Heb. 2:3-4).
